Continuity of Cultural Memory: From Samsun Tekel Tobacco Factory to Bafra Tobacco Museum

Abstract

The factory buildings that emerged with the industrial period are the most important architectural outputs of the period. Samsun Tekel Factory, which is one of the historical buildings bearing the traces of cultural heritage, continues its existence in the city as Bulvar AVM Life and Shopping Center today. The fact that this building, which was built in the 19th century but lost its function over time and became idle, can be reused is an important factor in preserving the traces of the factory in the city's memory. In addition, the Bafra Tobacco Museum, which was built recently and architecturally imitates the formal features of the factory structure, tries to maintain the bond that the society established with the factory in a different part of the city, by exhibiting the functioning of the factory and the stages in tobacco production. In addition to the similarity of the formal features of the buildings, there is an effort to provide a sustainable transfer in the museum in order to evoke the memories of people who have had factory or tobacco-related experiences. In this context, the formal and semantic analyzes of these two structures were examined by making comparisons. The fact that the story of tobacco, which started with the factory, is tried to be continued with the museum in the context of the structure-environment relationship, has been brought to the fore within the scope of the study.
